Do you have questions about nutrition, such as diabetes, obesity or unintentional weight loss? A dietician can help you with personal nutritional and dietary advice and guidance that suits your situation. You can also visit a dietician without a referral.
A dietician is a specialist in the field of nutrition. You can go to the dietician with all kinds of questions and complaints. Think of diabetes mellitus, gestational diabetes, cardiovascular diseases (such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol), gastrointestinal complaints, or if you have had a stomach reduction (bariatric surgery). The dietician also offers support if you are overweight, underweight or have unintentional weight loss. Do you have a food allergy or intolerance? Then they will also be happy to help you.
For the elderly, good nutrition is extra important, especially with dementia or after a stroke (CVA). The dieticians specialise in nutritional advice for the elderly and take your situation into account.
Dietitians work in many different locations in the Netherlands, often in health centres, hospitals or independently in the neighbourhood. If it is difficult to come to the practice, a home visit is possible in some cases. In that case, ask your GP or practitioner for an indication.
During a first appointment, which usually lasts about 45 minutes, you and the dietician will discuss your health situation, lifestyle, wishes and goals. Based on your situation, the dietician will draw up a tailor-made advice, tailored to what is feasible and pleasant for you. Follow-up appointments often last 15 to 30 minutes. How many conversations are needed, you decide together with the dietician.
Dietary advice is reimbursed from the basic insurance for 3 hours per calendar year. Please note that this falls under the statutory deductible.
Do you participate in a chain care programme via your GP, for example for diabetes, COPD or cardiovascular diseases? Then the costs will be reimbursed in full, without affecting your deductible.
Do you have supplementary insurance? Then you may be entitled to additional reimbursement for dietary counselling. Check your health insurer's policy conditions for this.
Want to know if a dietitian can help you? Then contact a dietician practice or discuss it with your GP. Together you can see what suits your situation best.
